Regular Nail Care
Regular nail care is important for your general foot health, not to mention your comfort! A consultation with a podiatrist will ensure correct diagnosis and effective treatment. A more serious nail problem, such as an ingrown toenail, can be prevented with early intervention.
There are a number of nail conditions that should be addressed by podiatry care, including:
- Long (elongated) toenails
- Thickened toenails
- Nail fungus
Learn about PACT - the latest fungal nail treatment
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail which is estimated it to affect 1.6 million Australians. Currently treatments include antifungal nail lacquers, oral medications and laser treatment. Some of these can have side effects or be costly.
Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT) provides an alternative treatment that is effective and painless. Each affected nail requires three sessions of 9.5 minutes exposure of light therapy. Your podiatrist will debride the affected nail and apply the gel before each treatment. It is recommended that the three treatments occur within a 7-10 day timeframe.
Ask your podiatrist for more information or to learn if this is a possible treatment option for your needs.
Calluses and corns are common skin conditions that can cause discomfort or pain when walking. Other conditions such as tinea (also known as “athlete’s foot”), should be treated early to prevent secondary fungal nail infections and bacterial infections.
If you are suffering from a skin problem affecting the feet, it is important to seek early consultation with a podiatrist for correct diagnosis and treatment.
Our Melbourne podiatrists provide care for foot skin conditions such as:
